Rocking chair

We have a tradition in our family, whoever has the youngest baby gets the family rocking chair. Besides my sister's kids, who live in Japan, all of the babies in our family have been rocked in this chair. My sisters and brothers have been rocked to sleep in this chair, my mom and her brothers have been rocked in the chair, my Granny was rocked in it, and I think her mom was rocked in it. It's a very old chair. When I rock Maggie each night I think of all the babies who have taken comfort in this chair, how many tears have been rolled down chubby little cheeks in this chair, how many sick kids who can't sleep who eventually give up the fight to sleep in this chair, and how many books have been read and stories told in this chair.

Our beloved rocking chair is starting to loosen at the joints making all sorts of endearing noises. She gives a little wobbly side to side motion when you rock, and frankly everytime you sit down you feel that this could be the time that she can't bear anymore and breaks.
So each night when you sit down with your precious load in your arms, you cringe as you sit and thank our dear old rocking chair that she hasn't given up the fight yet. More babies still need to enjoy her faithful arms.

  3. i have a little different perspective on that dear chair. I liken it to sitting down on an ice cold deck of cards. There's nothing like having your 98 degree back kiss the -2 degree wood back support of the chair. I'd rather get kicked in the face by a size 14 steel-toed kodiak boot. Boy i'll miss that chair...amy's husband

  4. Ya know Adam, I don't think Hazel has had her turn in the chair. I'll bring it right over.
