Making Bread

My mom is the BEST bread baker you'll ever meet. She can even make the most beautiful loaf in the middle of the woods in a dutch oven.

I went up the the north country (my mom's house) last weekend and had her 7 grain bread and oh it was good. Today I tried to replicate it. Good effort but no where close to the masters. Do you really know how much time goes into a loaf of homemade bread? 6 hours!! I like to "yell" at Cory to stop stomping around my rising dough like my mom did to us growing up, Im just passing along the tradition. Watch out Maggie.

A lot of work goes into a loaf of bread and patience galore. My mom says you have to knead your dough for 10 minutes, no less. Well those are the longest 10 minutes. And you feel it in every muscle of your body and you sweat. My mom also says that a true wedding ring isn't really broke in until you've gotten dough into all of its cracks.

We had our friends over for dinner for soup and bread tonight. Cory and I couldn't wait to try the bread and ate a third of it before our company arrived. My loaf wasn't close to my mom's, but still wonderful. Hmmm is there anything more delicious than a piece of fresh bread with melted butter?

I need more practice but I don't think my family objects to being taste testers. Someday I'll make a mean loaf like my mom.
